TOra: An Open-Source Database Tool

February 4th, 2009 · 3 Comments

I’ve been looking recently at database tools that are available.  There’s a lot of good ones out there like Oracle Enterprise Manager and TOAD, just to name two of them.  TOAD seems to be a favorite because of its powerful features, but it is fairly expensive unless your company is footing the bill.
The interesting thing [...]

aq_tm_processes Setting for E-Business Suite

December 2nd, 2008 · 2 Comments

Here’s a question that popped up during one of our client’s upgrades:
Question: Are you aware of any reason that a 11.5.10.2/10.2.0.3 instance would need/want to have aq_tm_processes=0? I’m familiar with setting it to zero for patching/upgrades, but when running live in production, I have always thought (and all of the docs I can find say) [...]

Do You Need a Password on the TNS Listener?

November 5th, 2008 · No Comments

One of our clients asked if they really need to use a password entry in the listener.ora file in their production environment. They pointed out that in MetaLink Note: 260986.1, Oracle states: “In Oracle 10, the TNS Listener is secure out of the box and there should not be a need [...]

So That’s What Those Hidden Oracle Parameters Are For!

November 5th, 2008 · No Comments

We hit this issue when we were cloning a production RAC environment that had been backed up using RMAN and then restored to a non-RAC test environment. To get past it, we had to add a hidden parameter to the target init.ora file to allow us to open the duplicated database, and [...]

Hard Copies… Give Me Hard Copies…

November 3rd, 2008 · 2 Comments

This month’s blog was supposed to be about a workflow issue that I ran into on a recent upgrade. However, that problem requires some additional research before I can post the findings here. So I decided to write about a different issue that came up during the same upgrade.
The recent upgrade was centered upon upgrading [...]

Oracle Critical Patch Updates for this Quarter

October 15th, 2008 · No Comments

A Critical Patch Update is a collection of patches for multiple security vulnerabilities. It also includes non-security fixes that are required (because of inter-dependencies) by those security patches. Critical Patch Updates are cumulative (with some exceptions) but each advisory describes only the security fixes added since the previous Critical Patch Update.
The Critical Patch [...]

If I Wanted to Sweat That Much, I’d Have Gone to the Sauna

October 1st, 2008 · 2 Comments

This month I am stealing a blog concept from a fellow blogger named Floyd Teter. A short time ago Floyd, an Oracle ACE Director and substantial blogger, blogged about mistakes made and lessons learned. I generally enjoy reading about the mistakes others make since those mistakes are good reminders that we need to be dilligent [...]

Making a Bee-line for BeeHive

September 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Oracle has introduced a new collaboration product, BeeHive, at OpenWorld.  It was the topic of the keynote address this morning (Monday).
This is another attempt by Oracle to crack into the collaboration market, which has been difficult for the previous product, called Collaboration Suite, since it was a rip and replace type of product.  Obviously organizations [...]
